Raising kids costs around $222,000, plus tuition

The grand total for middle-income parents raising one child from birth to 17 years old is a whopping $222,360, which doesn’t include pregnancy costs or college tuition, according to the United States Department of Agriculture’s 2009 Expenditures on Children by Families report. What’s more frightening is that this number is 22 percent higher than what it was in 1960 ($182,857 in 2009 dollars), when the USDA first began providing estimates of child-rearing expenditures.
