House leaders ask McDonald’s for ‘Shrek’ docs

Dow Jones Newswires | U.S. House leaders have asked McDonald’s
Corp. to submit information related to the fast-food chain’s recall of
Shrek glasses as part of an investigation into cadmium-tainted
children’s products.

Wednesday, House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D, Calif.) sent a letter to McDonald’s asking its officials to disclose what measures the fast-food chain takes to ensure that products sold to children aren’t hazardous. The committee also wants all documents pertaining to last week’s voluntary recall of more than 12 million glasses sold to promote the latest Shrek movie, because they contained the toxic metal cadmium. McDonald’s had sold the glasses for $2 a piece since May and is now offering customers $3 for each returned glass.

McDonald’s on Friday said the glasses met federal standards in independent tests but that it decided to recall the items as the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission develops new guidelines for cadmium in children’s products. No injuries were reported from the glasses.

McDonald’s representatives weren’t immediately available for comment late Wednesday.

The Committee also sent a letter to ARC International North America Inc., of Millville, N.J., which manufactured the Shrek glasses, asking about the origins of the paint used on the glasses and other information.

McDonald’s shares closed at $68.26 Wednesday, down 11 cents; they are up 9% so far this year.

Gee Bob, you can’t even spell or string a coherent thought together. Hangover? Cadmium overdose perhaps?

“The Committee also sent a letter to ARC International North America Inc., of Millville, N.J., which manufactured the Shrek glasses …” That sounds like the offending promo glasses were made in the USA, but in the New Economy actually manufacturing anything here is mostly heretical so their origin is not certain. Anyone know where they were really molded and painted?

Actually, Starstream, given the name of the manufacturer includes North America, it most likely is the sales office of an overseas manufacturer. Almost all low cost painted glass ware is made in China.
The issue is that children hold the glasses in their hands and, of course, use their hands to eat food. Cadmium should not be anything used to eat or drink. The factories use it as it helps the paint to set onto the glass faster and the fix the color better. Wonder what it does to the factory workers.

When things were made in America, we were much better of, men and women were employed to make these trinks for MCDonald, now all America is used for is to but chinese @#$%

Actually the glassware was American made. It is not just a sales office in NJ. I know someone who works for a competitor that typically does the work in China. They indicated McDonalds tried to avoid paying a middle man who usually would do the quality checking. Didn’t work this time.

I downloaded Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare torrent from http://www.games-iso.com last week and, even though its an old game, its the best NINTENDO DS game ever made in my opinion ;-)

Waste of time and energy – just politicians trying to grab press time for name recognition and at campaign time they went against mean corporate giant “for the children”. Vote them out!

How much compensation can you expect to get if you injure yourself at work and does anyone know a good back injury solicitors at all in the UK? I think it’s only fair that employers pay when you get hurt at work.
