GM recalls 1.5 million vehicles on fire risk

Posted June 8, 2010 at 11:02 a.m.

Reuters | General Motors Co. announced a recall of about 1.5 million trucks, crossovers and cars from model years 2006-2009 on Tuesday, because the unit that heats the windshield washer fluid could catch fire.

Jeff Boyer, GM director for safety, said the supplier who made the module that heats the washer fluid has stopped manufacturing, leaving no chance to design an improved unit.

GM will pay each customer $100 when the heated fluid module is removed
at dealerships, Boyer said.

The models involved include the 2007-2009 model year Chevrolet Silverado
3500 pickup truck, Avalanche, Suburban and Tahoe; Cadillac Escalade,
Escalade ESV and Escalade EXT; GMC Acadia, Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL;
and the Saturn Outlook.

The model year 2009 Chevrolet Traverse is also included.

Models from the 2008-2009 years include the Buick Enclave and Cadillac
CTS.

Also recalled are the model year 2006-2009 Buick Lucerne, Cadillac DTS
and Hummer H2.

GM in 2009 dropped the Hummer and Saturn brands as part of its
post-bankruptcy restructuring.

In addition to the 1.365 million vehicles recalled in the United States,
about 98,800 vehicles will be recalled in Canada, about 26,250 in
Mexico and 38,100 elsewhere, GM said.

Will congress go all potal on Barry’s Government Motors as it did Toyota? I did not think so.

I’d love to see Goverment Motor’s folks getting grilled by congressfolk who have not a clue about engineering!!! LOL

Toyota a has a few recalls in the last 20-30 years. GM, Chrysler and Ford have at least 2 major recalls a year. Where’s all the stink and crying and lashing out now???? Hmmm, hmmmm? Where is it? Oh god forbid we would do that to Government run motors. I will NEVER, EVER purchase a GM or Chrysler product again. How come this isn’t on every newscast and in every paper for the next 3 months. That’s right, because the government won’t allow it. It’s dangerous folks. The government is already running your life. The run your healthcare, your automakers(if you choose to buy American) and your DMV and your Post Office and your Social Security office. Do I need to point out to you how inefficient and poorly run the last 3 are?? Welcome to your new healthcare. Get this administration out of the white house and vote out all incumbents. Take this country back. Get your freedom’s and liberties back!!

Poor Government Motors. Or should I say poor us. The U.S. Taxpayers own 60% of Government Motors.

Most definitely, I agree that you won’t see the same level of outrage from Americans–politicians or regular citizens–about this than you did from the FAUX Toyota situation. However, to put this recall on GM being majority-owned by the government is ridiculous. All you have to do is READ the article…these were for models manufactured for years PRIOR to the government even taking majority ownership in the company.
This has to do with poorly manufactured vehicles in general produced by companies run by greedy corporate executives who ran the companies into the ground in the first place, facilitating a government intervention.
And for all the people shouting “BUY AMERICAN”, realize that more Toyota and Honda vehicles are being manufactured in U.S. assembly plants than GM, Ford, or Chrysler.
The real suckers in this are us for buying into this manufactured bull by the media to deflect the real issue of incompetent PRIVATE leadership gaining financially from mediocre (or worse) performance.

DMV? Here in Illinois we call it the Secretary of State and while I’m not a government cheerleader in any regard, I think the Secretary of State facilities are actually run very well and very efficiently. I can’t say I’ve had anything but a quick and efficient experience my last several times in there.

Bring government motors execs before congress! And David Axelrod while you’re at it!

Hans, I went to the Secretary of State’s office in the Thompson Center two weeks ago because one of the corners of my existing Driver’s License was broken and needed replaced. It did not expire for four more years and I simply needed to replace an existing ID in my possession. I waited through two lines and had to sit in a waiting area for a total of three hours. In the end I didn’t have to take a new picture and I still only got my new ID after wasting nearly half of a day sitting and waiting. Maybe this is what democrats like you call “run very well and efficiently” but I call it pathetic and inefficient.

First before you attack me, I do not drive or own a GM car, or their stock, but I do drive American!!!
The problem with Toyota’s recall was not that it was Toyota! It was the fact that first they tried to hide it, second they found a fix that did not work, third I still think that it was a computer problem. The cars behaved the same way as car would behave when cruse control is turned on and the car has to accelerate.
The software was hacked by someone and cars where told to behave this way. Yes, it was probably done by American company to raise sales of domestic cars. But nobody will admit to this because it will spread a panic around. With today’s technology, the amount of computers and electronics in our cars, it is only a matter of time when we will have to buy anti virus software for our cars. Otherwise you will turn your steering wheel to the right, and the car will turn left.
In this economical situation we all should buy American products!!!

First, let me say that I don’t have a GM car (mine’s from Japan).
But, please. A car has to do three things right: go, stop, turn. With respect to these basic, required functions, compare Toyota’s recent woes to GM’s recall for . . . an accessory. And you expect the same kind of reaction? No, you don’t, and your false indignation is pathetic.

All you people bashing GM and calling it Government Motors, remember this efficiency and quality because it’s going to be comin’atcha with Government Cross and Government Shield Insurance.
Change you can believe in, but can you live with it? LOL.

    Go American cars!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jeff, quit complaining. These jobs keep a lot of our elected officials relatives working on the Government Doe, especially in Chicago and Cook County where the Corrupt democrats rule supreme I bet a lot of them did not look very bright too.

Hey, um, Anne – the car models recalled are 2006-2009. In other words, this happened on BUSH’s watch, long before Obama “took over” GM. Got it?

  17. chicago8 June 8, 2010 at 4:26 pm

So why did windshield washing liquid need to be heated
    in the first place?
the fluid is supposed to be good to 30 below zero
another example of useless technology, raising cost of cars.

Whatever you want to call it, Government Motors or General Motors, hundreds of thousands of Americans who work directly for GM or as parts suppliers, dealers and repair people are still employed thanks to our government. Republicans and their sad, unpatriotic, unchristian-like ilk, including those dried up old tea baggers just can’t stand our government doing any good. Republicans, controlling the Executive Branch for 8 of the last 10 years and Congress for 12 of the last 14 years, have essentially created The Great World Wide Recession and enabled the The Great Gulf Oil Spill through deregulation of every industry and everything except **** Cheney’s bank account. I guess I can understand why Republicans are so self loathing and hate this country with so much passion. To that I say, leave or get out of politics altogether—preferably both.
