Associated Press | Caterpillar Inc. plans to invest nearly $700
million in the next four years to start producing a mining shovel and
expand production of trucks at plants in Illinois and India.

The
world’s largest maker of construction and mining equipment said Thursday
that it plans to build the new mining shovel product line at its Aurora
plant and expand truck production in Decatur and Chennai, India.

The Aurora plant is likely to gain about 300 jobs through 2014.  Jim Dugan, spokesman for Peoria-based Caterpillar, says jobs will be added at the other plants as demand increases, but the company doesn’t have specific estimates of how many.

The new mining shovels will range from 125-ton to 800-ton-models.

And these are real jobs too, substantial value added actually making something, in this case capital goods, not yet more “services” positions shuffling mortage paper around.
