Associated Press | Apple CEO Steve Jobs is going on the offensive
against Adobe’s Flash technology. He says it has too many bugs, drains
batteries too quickly and is too oriented to personal computers to work
on the iPhone and iPad.
In a statement Thursday, Jobs laid out his reasons for excluding Flash
– the most popular vehicle for videos and games on the Internet — from
Apple’s blockbuster handheld devices.
He cited “reliability, security and performance,” and the fact that Flash was designed “for PCs using mice, not for touch screens using fingers” as some of the reasons Apple will continue to keep the program off its devices.
But he said the most important reason for excluding Flash is that it puts a third party between Apple and software developers. That means developers can take advantage of improvements from Apple only if Adobe upgrades its own software, Jobs wrote.
Apple has been criticized for omitting Flash, which limits what the iPhone can do because some games and videos require Flash. But in his rebuttal, Jobs said that with an abundance of media outlets offering their content on iPhones and iPads, “Flash is no longer necessary to watch video or consume any kind of Web content.”
“And the 200,000 apps on Apple’s App Store proves that Flash isn’t necessary for tens of thousands of developers to create graphically rich applications, including games,” he wrote.
Adobe representatives did not have an immediate comment Thursday.
Calling the cops on the guys that found a lost prototype iPhone – I declare that UNFIT human being-ness.
So does he think that the whole internet is going to change so people can see it on their apple mobile products??? Good luck not being able to see half the internet…suckers.
Flash stinks anyway. It’s no loss to Apple.
can you say: droid
Isn’t it funny how Apple has become the type of company it mocked in its 1984 commercial?
Gee Steve, you wouldn’t be forcing people to buy a bunch of apps from your app store by refusing to include Flash on your devices, thereby lining your pockets with more cash? Nah, that couldn’t possibly be it.
Oh, right. That’s the entire reason for this. He can make all the claims he wants to, but it’s entirely about content control and money. Apple wants to control what you can put on your device, and it wants to make money off of you anywhere it possibly can by forcing you to buy things that should come with your device. And pay twice as much for that device to begin with.
Yeah, calling for such an in depth law investigation with the lost iphone prototype is overboard but that is Jobs. Steve can be a jackmule true, a brilliant jackmule though.
Being in the field for 15+ years I’ve created/edited a few action scripts/flash files with Macromedia/Adobe Flash over the years and unfortunately in most cases what’s deployed is not constructed well usually resulting in an unnecessary bandwidth/resource hog. Videos, games, ad banners, etc. no longer are dependent on Flash either these days and other tools have taken over. Usually it’s either an old site or a less professional site you’d find lack of Flash impeding. Formal training in web/application design always says “never use Flash for navigation or tool bar use”.
I have it installed on my eeeBuntu netbook, and it will play about 4 seconds of video they take a 8 second break and play the next 4 seconds.
Droid? Bwahahahahahaha! That’s like driving a Yugo when the rest of the world enjoys Ferrari. Come on, you probably think a knock off mp3/mp4 player is just as good as an iPod too, right? LOL!
Flash will drain your battery faster and slow down ops. In the end, your new ‘ability’ will cost you endless time recharging and downloading continuous updates.
Apple does two things really well – they bring creative products that work well to people who want them and they market them like geniuses.
Flash is so 2005…
Seriously, it’s not needed as it once was.
If you want Flash “lite” as well the swiss-army knife get a Windows Mobile device. I had the HTC Mogul circa 2008 with the cooked ROMs, Flash, etc. and it was a true “pocket PC” yet it had to be well neutered for a charge to last a semi-full day. It also needed to be rebooted daily. It also needed additional applications to get near the intuitiveness of the iphone. No where near the speed.
Well, it’s always a pleasure to have Mr Jobs tell us what’s good for us (and what isn’t).
Because, it just wouldn’t be cool to let the user make his/her own decision on whether or not to use flash– not when Master Jobs can make that decision for you.
One of the many reasons Apple sucks.
This is another trial to shut up his fanatics about complaints for why they should spent $$$ on his fancy gadgets and they can’t even watch almost 70% of the modern dynamic content and webs out there… unless it is the Apple way. Google Android supports Flash 10.1 If google can, why doesn’t apple? ha! give me a break!
Tons of “apps” are made in flash, better that he lines his pockets than they remain free. At least from his perspective.
“…That means developers can take advantage of improvements from [Adobe] only if [Apple] upgrades its own software”
Fixed that for you.
If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.
Hi there, I find that your case is rather perceptive as it highlights a good deal of accurate data. By the way, was thinking whether you would love to interchange web links with my web portal, as I am looking to build contacts to further spear point and gain ground for my web space. I do not mind you laying my web links at the home page, just approving this links on this particular page is more than enough. Furthermore, would you be kind enough contact me at my web space if you are keen in the link exchange, I would really like that. Best wishes from me and hope to hear from you shortly!
