Bloomberg | About 39 million people in the U.S. received food stamps in December, as the jobless rate hovered near a 26-year high, the government said.

Recipients of the coupons for food purchases climbed 23 percent from a year earlier, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said today in a statement on its Web site. The number of Americans getting the subsidy has set records for 13 straight months.
