Associated Press | Federal safety officials say they will look into complaints from Toyota Corolla drivers about difficulty with the steering on their vehicles.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received about 80 complaints from drivers of 2009 and 2010 Corollas. Many say their cars can wander when they drive on the highway, making it hard to stay in lanes |

NHTSA says it will determine if a formal safety investigation is warranted. But agency officials also stress that it is standard procedure to review the tens of thousands of driver complaints they get every year on a wide range of vehicles.
Toyota’s safety issues are under intense scrutiny due to recalls over gas pedal problems. The company also recalled some of its Prius hybrids last night.
My first reaction is this: Car wandering? Stop texting and drive! Look at the road and put at least one hand on the wheel!
Second is, I wonder what other problems are still lurking for Toyota.
I rented a Corolla a few years back and would never buy one because it wandered. Very fatiguing when driving any distance.
This problem is more serious than the sticky gas pedal.at least you can hold the brake down, and not all the cars have sticky pedals. But the steering problem is on all of them.
I have this car and love it except for the very dangerous steering. I have white knuckles after driving it on the expressway ! and the car is undriveable on a windy day.
FIX THIS PROBLEM FIRST PLEASE !
Interesting – I’ve owned and operated Toyotas exclusively for the past 19 years and have never experienced any of the problems reported in the press.
And now it’s power steering. I’m beginning to wonder if this isn’t politics instead of safety. Who’s got it in for Toyota and what did Toyota do to the wrong person/company?
In reality, this is probably an alignment issue. Most cars do not get Camber and Caster set at the factory, they get sent out the door as-is. Ford audits several cars a shift for alignment; given Toyota’s recent issues, I doubt that Toyota checks alignment at all.
Have a Corolla and it drives just fine. Its a small car built very light to get higher gas mileage. If you didnt realize that when you bought it for the 36 MPG, then you should have done more research.
@McDuff Hmmm… government owns a car company… wonder who has it in for Toyota?
The steering problem started with the 2009 models. A new steering system called EPS (electronis power steering ) is the problem. YOU BETTER DRIVE ONE BEFORE YOU BUY ONE !
I’m with McDuff. I’ve owned a Corolla or it’s sibling, the Geo Prizm, for the past 17 years and never had any problems with brakes or steering. Or anything else for that matter.
I am a Corolla with a Corona guy (sans lime). Has left to a lot of wandering while using both at same time….
Henny Penny! The Sky is Falling!
Vultures on the wire, everyone that can try to get out of a ticket for weaving or running off the road for driving to fast or texting while driving is coming out of the cracks to feed on the prey. My children have driven Corollas since they started driving and the only weaving or pulling they have experienced is when they are on their cell phones. Go away vultures how pathetic.
Wow! what an idea ! What a concept ! Beautiful .. Amazing …
Hey, great blog…but I don’t understand how to add your site in my rss reader, if I can figure out how to get it to work…LOL
