By Bob Goldsborough | Former Chicago Bears and current Cincinnati Bengals running back Cedric Benson is selling his two-story, 12-room house in Libertyville for $899,000.

The Bears released Benson, 27, in June 2008 after his second alcohol-related arrest in just over a month. He later was cleared of all charges and signed with Cincinnati in September 2008.

Benson, who signed a five-year, $35 million contract with the Bears in August 2005, paid $1.02 million that same month for the house.

He first listed the traditional-style house in Libertyville in September for $935,000, and later cut its asking price to $899,000.

Over the last two years, Benson completely updated the four-bedroom home. Built in 1997, the house has 3 1/2 baths, two fireplaces, formal dining and living rooms, a two-story great room, updated baths, gabled ceilings, high-profile moldings, a loft and balcony off the master bedroom, and a kitchen with custom cabinetry, granite countertops, stainless steel appliances and a glass tile backsplash. The 1.5-acre property is wooded and fenced.

Benson also owns a 4,273-square-foot house on a 1.21-acre parcel in Austin, Texas, that he purchased in 2007 for an undisclosed price, along with a 2,182-square-foot town house in Austin that he bought in 2005 for an undisclosed price.

Benson is one of a scant few current or former Bears to own in Libertyville. Bears free safety Danieal Manning is another notable owner, having paid $535,000 in 2007 for his 3,804-square-foot house in Libertyville.

Are you kidding me?! How is THIS news? It’s stories like that this that ruin any credibility the news media might have had.

  2. Timmy Feb. 12, 2010 at 1:20 pm

And this made the news because we all care so much about Cedric Benson and his money, right?

  3. Sam Feb. 12, 2010 at 1:21 pm

Tom, you make this exact same comment on every real estate story. Let it go. Or just don’t read them.

  4. CS Feb. 12, 2010 at 1:31 pm

And Cedric Benson loses yardage on first down. Seems to be a theme…

  5. nancy Feb. 12, 2010 at 1:42 pm

Well, boohoo for Cedric (hate to see a guy that plays football lose money – NOT) but I am surprised to see that a pro athlete would purchase in Libertyville. Don’t they usually want the city or much more uppity suburbs?

Is THIS the kind of story the Trib is left with to fill space? And people wonder why papers are failing. Everybody and their BROTHERS are losing money on the sale of homes they bought in the last few years. I just got out of a closing where the seller had to bring a check to the table instead of getting one himself.
C’mon, Trib. You’re better than that…or used to be.

  7. joe1 Feb. 12, 2010 at 2:00 pm

and this is “breaking” news!!??? WHO CARES!!!

  8. Reality Feb. 12, 2010 at 2:24 pm

That’s about a 10% loss. I’d take that on my house any day.
    How is this news?

  9. Bob Feb. 12, 2010 at 2:47 pm

I solute the Trib for its excellent reporting!! Keep it up.

  10. Sean Feb. 12, 2010 at 2:58 pm

Go Bengals. I would have to say I actually enjoyed Benson run all over the Pack this year. I even bust out his Bears Jersey that weekend!!

  11. Tom Feb. 12, 2010 at 2:59 pm

Looks like someone got paid to try to disguise, and very poorly at that, a real estate listing as a news story. Heck, the whole thing is about the house and they couldn’t even put up a picture of it?
When’s the next round of layoffs or trip to bankruptcy court scheduled?

  12. Adolph Feb. 12, 2010 at 3:21 pm

Yes, Tribune. We certainly wouldn’t want to see any stories about, oh I don’t know, Congressional and Senate backroom deals designed to hoodwink the U.S. taxpayer….

    Good…

  14. Dino Feb. 12, 2010 at 5:53 pm

This is nothing but good news!! This bum had no problems taking money from the Bears and their fans and producing nothing.

Good..Hope he tears his knee up and doesn’t get paid since he already stole 26 mili from the Bears.

All of you commenters make me want to commit suicide. What a bunch of losers all of you are.

  19. Graycap123 Feb. 13, 2010 at 11:30 a.m.

Wow………..Benson is somewhere still laughing at Chicago.
    Good riddance.

  20. chicagoman Feb. 13, 2010 at 2:48 pm

Ditto all the comments. I’ve had my house on the market for 4 years at 25% below what the market was. So cry me a river if a guy makes millions and I’m on social security.
Between the Trib and Times it’s a toss up who has the dumbest writers. But than they end up at the negative SCORE station to talk stupid and around it goes.

  24. Moneybags Feb. 14, 2010 at 4:30 pm

Umm, okay, so all you people with the hate want to live in Soviet Russia? Seriously this huge forum rant is unbelievable.
Grow up. You live in a world economy where you may even get beat up by some Indian dude who went to a better school than the Republicans have made with their love of private enterprise.
Private enterprise works better when it has a government that supports it. Look at Europe, morons.
Ced Benson is part of the calamity made by republican policy. He makes a bunch of money, then buys a house beyond his means (somehow) then you elephanters gasp when it all goes wrong. You are unbelievable.

    You are UNBELIEVABLE>

Those of us in Cincinnati…appreciate the player he is today. A great team mate that appears to be enjoying his time here…
    “Thanks”

  27. Randy Feb. 17, 2010 at 5:50 pm

Yeah for Ced, hes doing great now that he is away from the bears idiot organization. hmmm same as Jones, hmmm same as Orton. and all these idiotic fans do is boo benson, like they did Rex, thinking all along its these players fault that the bears are loosers. lolol
He sold it less than list, how is that losing money? A smart realtor lists a little high anyways.

  28. big bad john Feb. 18, 2010 at 8:14 a.m.

He can probably afford to lose some money on his home in comparisons to the thousands of others who can’t and will forever feel the loss.
With his added bonuses, commercials and the fact that he is now playing for a much better coached team. A team with a much better and brighter ownership, a team with a much smarter General Manager, I would have to say that Cedric really didn’t lose much at all. In fact I’m sure he is using most of this supposed loss and a tax write off.
I would also think that Cedric and his Realtor listed a bit high and did OK with the final offer and sale. My question is how you really feel that this is newsworthy when many Americans are losing their homes due to foreclosures because banks won’t modify loans?
Do a story on how does a couple modify a loan to save their home when they have no job and no work to be found? Where are these people to go? Who will put them up? Federal government and State government going to start dishing out money for that now? We need to stop the bleeding and more on the target stories might help with that.

I find it difficult to believe everything that is written here is all true. Maybe some of you should look to do some more research before you comment on here in future!

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
